The chandelier in the center of the drawing room reflected off the orange sunset outside. Each vermilion beam ricocheted off the mighty crystals, their light hitting pinpoints in the large rooms. Millions of tiny orange beads scattered themselves across the rug, the furniture, and the walls. Lucius sat in his favored chair, a novel in one hand and his chin in the other. A pair of reading glasses rested on his stately nose as his silver eyes focused on the page.
Narcissa passed the open door; a sleeping Draco nestled into the crook of her left arm. Her hair was slightly mussed and her eyes were tired, if not loving. Motherhood was a new thing to the former debutante, but she was handling the pangs with a grace none would have foreseen. She crossed the floor, her footsteps light and soundless, and placed a tiny kiss on her husband’s forehead. His eyes only lingered on the pages for an instant before meeting his wife’s of cerulean blue.
“He’s sleeping?” Lucius whispered inquisitively with a glance at the small boy.
“Thankfully,” Narcissa breathed. A tendril of golden hair fell before her soft face. “I’ve only just been able to sing him to rest.”
“You’re beautiful, Narcissa,” Lucius stated after a small pause. His long fingers reached up and tucked her hair behind her ear. “The sun is falling and you may want to rest your eyes. The tiny dragon is to wake before its rising.”
She smiled briefly as he tucked a marker into the pages of his novel, leaving it in the room of tiny vermilion beads with his wife and son nearby.
